From глиг (glig, fang) +‎ -а́н (-án, augmenative suffix), from Old Church Slavonic глъıгъ (glŭıgŭ), in turn from Proto-Slavic *kъlъ (fang, tusk). Cognate with the verb ко́ля (kólja, to butcher), Russian клык (klyk), Polish kieł, Czech kel, Serbo-Croatian каљак, Slovene kȅl.
