Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *jān. Cognate to Southern Altai јалмаш (ǰalmaš), Kazakh жанбас (janbas), Karakalpak janbas, Nogai янбас (yanbas), Karaim janbaš, Kumyk янбаш (yanbaş), Bashkir янбаш (yanbaş), Uzbek yonbosh, etc.
