From Proto-Turkic *kes- (to cut). Cognate with Kazakh кесу (kesu), Kyrgyz кесүү (kesüü), Kumyk гесмек (gesmek), Azerbaijani kəsmək, Turkish kesmek, Khakas кизерге (kizerge), Shor кезерге, Western Yugur kes-, Tuvan кезер (kezer) etc.
