From Proto-Turkic *kūrïk (dry).

Cognate with Khakas хуруғ (xuruğ), Tatar коры (qorı), Karachay-Balkar къуру (quru), Uzbek quruq, Uyghur قۇرۇق (quruq), Turkish kuru (dry), Chuvash хӑрӑк (hărăk, dry (of wood)).
