Inherited from Old East Slavic львъ (lĭvŭ), from Proto-Slavic *lь̀vъ, borrowed from Gothic *𐌻𐌹𐍅𐌰 (*liwa), 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍅𐌰 (laiwa), from Latin leō, from Ancient Greek λέων (léōn). Cognate to Russian лев (lev).
