Bulgarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, inherited from Proto-Slavic *merzgavъ, akin to 0-grade verb мръ́ждя (mrǎ́ždja, to glimmer). Has been also compared with Proto-Slavic *brězgъ (downbreak), on the assumption of irregular alternation *br- ↔ *mr-.

Gerov spells the lemma with nasal -ѧ-, perhaps in analogy with (rhyming) near-synonym дре́згав (drézgav, impermeable, dim, shadowy) < *dręzga (thicket).

Adjectives[edit]
