олево (modern example)

Etymology

[edit]

Colloquialized pronunciation of an earlier холево (holevo) (attested in dialectal Greek borrowings), from Proto-Slavic *xoľevo (bandage, cover).

In the modern language, the sense “sock, stocking” has been overtaken by the Turkish borrowing чора́п (čoráp).
