From Proto-Permic *piʒ́es, from Proto-Finno-Permic *puntɜ, ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn. Cognates include Eastern Mari пундаш (pundaš) and Western Mari пындаш (pyndaš).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian пыдӧс (pydös) and Komi-Permyak пыдӧс (pydös).
