Inherited from Old East Slavic свинꙑ́и (svinýi), from Proto-Slavic *svinъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *swīˀnas, from Proto-Indo-European *suH-iHnos, from *suH- (pig, hog, swine) + *-iHnos.

Equivalent to сви(нья́) (svi(nʹjá)) +‎ -но́й (-nój).
