From Proto-Permic [Term?], from Proto-Uralic *sewe-. Cognates include Finnish syödä and Northern Mansi тэ̄ӈкве (tè̄ňkwe).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian сёйны (śojny) and Komi-Yazva сюйнө (śujnå).
