Inherited from Old Ruthenian стели́ти (stelíti), from earlier сла́ти (sláti) with the infinitive leveled based on the present tense stem (стел-), from Old East Slavic стьлати (stĭlati), from Proto-Slavic *stьlati. Doublet of сла́ти (sláty).
