Inherited from Proto-Slavic *strělьcь. By surface analysis, стріля́ти (striljáty) +‎ -ець (-ecʹ). Compare Russian стреле́ц (streléc), Belarusian страле́ц (straljéc), Polish strzelec, Czech střelec, Slovak strelec.
