From Proto-Permic *tulis, probably from Proto-Uralic *towke. Cognates include Erzya тундо (tundo) and Northern Khanty тови (towi).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian тулыс (tulys) and Udmurt тулыс (tulys).
