Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *paraćúš, possibly from Old Persian *paraθuš (note irregular t instead of s from Proto-Iranian *c). Cognate with Sanskrit परशु (paraśu) and maybe also with Ancient Greek πέλεκυς (pélekus).
