Old Armenian

Etymology

[edit]

From Classical Syriac ܒܘܨܝܢ (bwṣyn /būṣīn/), ܒܘܨܝܢܐ (bwṣynˀ /būṣīnā/, wick, candle; pumpkin, gourd; mullein),[1][2][3] ultimately from Proto-Semitic *būṣ-. Mullein, also called "candle-wick plant", was used to make wicks: see Verbascum_thapsus#Other_uses.

Noun

[edit]

բուծին (bucin)

  1. (hapax) candlewick
    Synonym: պատրոյգ (patroyg)
    • 5th century, Basil of Caesarea, Yałags Vecʻawreay ararčʻutʻean [Homiliae in Hexaemeron] , (1830 edition, page 57):
Եւ որ ինչ ծծին և ձգին, ի սպառումն կրթէ հասանէ՝ ըստ օրինակի պատրուկ ճրագի կամ բուծնոյ, որ ծծեն քամեն զիւղն առ ի կերակուր հրոյ։
Ew or inčʻ ccin ew jgin, i spaṙumn krtʻē hasanē, əst ōrinaki patruk čragi kam bucnoy, or ccen kʻamen ziwłn aṙ i kerakur hroy.

Usage notes

[edit]

The word is a hapax legomenon. The only attestation is in the genitive form բուծնոյ (bucnoy). The nominative բուծին (bucin) is assumed based on it. Theoretically, nominatives *բուծն (*bucn) or *բուծուն (*bucun) are also possible, but the correct one is բուծին (bucin) as evidenced by the etymology.[2]
