Etymology

[edit]

Usually considered an inner-Armenian formation as գով (gov) +‎ ասեմ (asem) +‎ -ան (-an), but Asatryan argues for a possibility of borrowing from early Parthian *gōβ(a)sān (praise-sayer, panegyrist), on which see 𐫃𐫇𐫘𐫀𐫗 (gwsʾn). See also վիպասան (vipasan).
