Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Possibly from a Semitic *ḥunṭ- (edible grain), a form cognate to Arabic حِنْطَة (ḥinṭa, wheat) and what is mentioned there of Semitic reflexes. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ondʰ-os- and related to անդ (and).
