Together with Old Georgian ტანჯვა (ṭanǯva) borrowed from Middle Iranian: compare Persian تنجیدن (tanjidan, to squeeze, to draw tight).

  1. (transitive) to torment, to torture, to rack, to afflict, to cause to suffer, to harrow
  2. (intransitive) to be tormented, to suffer tortures
    զանհնարին տանջանս տանջիzanhnarin tanǰans tanǰihe suffers cruel torments
    տանջին զանմահ մահնtanǰin zanmah mahnthey die eternal death
