Etymology[edit]

From the Mishnah, Seder Nezikin, Pirkei Avot Chapter 2:5. Literally “In a place where there are no men, try to be a man.” That is, where there are no good or worthy people a person should strive to be one.

Proverb[edit]

בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁאֵין אֲנָשִׁים, הִשְׁתַּדֵּל לִהְיוֹת אִישׁ. (b'maqóm she'éin 'anashím, hishtadél lihyót 'ísh)
