מֶלְצַר (meltsárm (plural indefinite מֶלְצָרִים, singular construct מֶלְצַר־, plural construct מֶלְצָרֵי־, feminine counterpart מֶלְצָרִית)

  1. A waiter, a (male) server.
    • Tanach, Daniel 1:16, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:
      וַיְהִי הַמֶּלְצַר נֹשֵׂא אֶת־פַּתְבָּגָם, וְיֵין מִשְׁתֵּיהֶם; וְנֹתֵן לָהֶם זֵרְעֹנִים.
      vayəhí hammeltzár nosé et-patbagám, vəyḗn mishtēhém; vənotén lahém zer'oním.
      So the steward took away their food, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
