Etymology[edit]

Derived from Classical Syriac ܚܪ̈ܘܥܐ (ḥarrūʿā, yellow) as the male flowers are yellow; compare also ܚܪܝܥܐ (ḥrīˁā, safflower) and ܚܪܐ (ḥrāˁ, a plant name, especially those with yellow flowers).
