Etymology

From Venetian venedego (Venetian) and Byzantine Greek Βενετικός (Benetikós, Venetian), variant of Ancient Greek Ἐνετικός (Enetikós) under influence from Latin veneticus, from Ἐνετοί (Enetoí, Eneti; Veneti; Venetian) + -ικός (-ikós, ic: forming adjectives). Compare the similar development of German Venedig, Swedish Venedig, etc. from venedego and veneticus.
