From English whiskey, whisky, from Irish uisce beatha, from Scottish Gaelic uisge-beatha (literally “water of life”), from Proto-Celtic *udenskyos (“water”) + *biwotos (“life”), from *biwos (“alive”), calque of Latin aqua vitae.
