Etymology

Compare Classical Persian افسان (afsān), فسان (fasân), سان (sân, whetstone). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *abi-saH-na-[1] or *ham-saH-na-,[2][3] from Proto-Iranian *saH- (to whet, cut).

Compare also Armenian հեսան (hesan), from Old Armenian յեսան (yesan), which formerly was considered as the source of the Kurdish word.[4][5]
