From Proto-Iranian *abráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *abʰrás, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥bʰrós (“rain-cloud, rain, cloud”).
Cognates include Avestan 𐬀𐬡𐬭𐬀 (aβra), Sanskrit अभ्र (abhrá), Old Armenian ամբ (amb), Latin imber and Ancient Greek ἀφρός (aphrós).
