Corruption of ܝܲܘܡܵܐ (yawmā, day) + ܐ݇ܚܪܹܢܵܐ (ḥrēnā, another), “another day”, possibly also ܐܘܿ (ō, that, the) at the start.

As this word may refer to either a day in the past or the future, some dialects may distinguish between the two with the phrases ܠܵܐ ܬܸܡܵܠܝ ܐܘܿܡܵܚܪܹܢܵܐlā timmāl ōmāḥrēnāNot yesterday, the day before yesterday and ܠܵܐ ܨܲܦܪܵܐ ܐܘܿܡܵܚܪܹܢܵܐlā ṣaprā ōmāḥrēnāNot tomorrow, the day after tomorrow.
