Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀖𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀤𑀺 (ghalladi, it throws), from Sanskrit *घल्यति (ghalyati, it pours), from घृ (ghṛ), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrēy- (to smear), extended from *gʰer- (to rub). Cognate with Marathi घालणे (ghālṇe).
