Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮 (cella), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀘𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*cella). Cognate with Punjabi ਚੇਲਾ (celā) / چیلا (celā), Gujarati ચેલો (celo), Marathi चेला (celā).
