From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰyáH, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷyéH (bow-string, string). Cognate with Avestan 𐬘𐬌𐬌𐬁 (jiiā), Persian زه (zeh), Ancient Greek βιός (biós, bow-string, tendon), Middle Welsh gieu (tendon).
