Inherited from Prakrit *𑀆𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀅 (*āddaa), from Sanskrit आर्द्रक (ārdraka, ginger),[1] from आर्द्र (ārdra, wet), as fresh ginger is wet. Doublet of আর্দ্র (ardro).
