Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀁𑀤𑀤𑀺 (kaṃdadi), from Sanskrit ক্রন্দতি (krandati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *krándati, from Proto-Indo-European *kléh₁-nd-, from *kelh₁- (to call, cry, shout). Cognate with Assamese কান্দ (kand) and Sylheti ꠇꠣꠘ꠆ꠖ (xand).
