Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀼𑀟 (kukkuḍa), from Sanskrit कुक्कुट (kukkuṭa), of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Assamese কুকুৰা (kukura), Odia କୁକୁଡ଼ା (kukuṛa), Nepali कुखुरा (kukhurā), Gujarati કૂકડો (kūkḍo).
