Etymology

Borrowed from Portuguese greja, an apheretic variant of igreja, from Latin ecclēsia, from Ancient Greek ἐκκλησῐ́ᾱ (ekklēsíā, assembly). Cognate with Hindi गिरजा (girjā), Bodo (India) गिरजा (girja), Gujarati ગિરજા (girjā), Konkani इगर्जे (igarje).
