Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀩𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀧𑀸𑀟 (*baṭṭapāḍa), from earlier Prakrit *𑀯𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀧𑀸𑀝 (*vaṭṭapāṭa), from Sanskrit वर्त्मपात (vartmapāta, waylayer, attacker (on a road or journey)), from वर्त्म (vartma, path, road, way) +‎ पात (pāta, fall; attack, incursion).
