From সন্ত (sonto) +‎ -এ (-e), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀲𑀦𑁆𑀢 (santa), from Sanskrit অস্ (as). Cognate to Sylheti ꠅꠘꠦ (one), Kudmali হঁঁতে.
