Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀮𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀸 (pālakkā), from Sanskrit पालक्या (pālakyā, Indian spinach (Beta bengalensis)) (whence Chinese 菠薐 (bōléng) and Japanese 菠薐草 (hōrensō)). Cognate with Bengali পালং (paloṅ), Hindustani پالک / पालक (pālak), Marathi पालक (pālak).
