From ค่า (kâa, value; cost; price; etc) +‎ สินไหม (damages) +‎ ทดแทน (tót-tɛɛn, to make up (for); to replace; to repay; etc); perhaps first used in the revised Book 1 of the Civil and Commercial Code of Siam, enacted on 11 November 1922.
