From Proto-Tai *tomꟲ (“to boil (transitive)”). Cognate with Lao ຕົ້ມ (tom), Northern Thai ᨲᩫ᩠᩶ᨾ, Shan တူမ်ႈ (tūum), Ahom 𑜄𑜤𑜉𑜫 (tum), Zhuang dumq.
