From Old Georgian ტირიფი (ṭiripi). Further etymology unknown. Possibly from the root -ტირ- (-ṭir-, to cry).

Possibly from Proto-Kartvelian *ṭerep-, cognate with Svan ტელე̄ფი (ṭelēpi, alpine dock (Rumex alpinus)).[1]
