From Proto-Celtic *makkʷos, a variant of *makʷos (“son”) (compare Welsh mab, Gaulish mapos, Maponos), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ḱ- (“long, thin”) (compare Ancient Greek μακρός (makrós, “long”), Latin macer (“thin”).
