Etymology

Uncertain. Seems to display a suffix like in μόχθος (mókhthos) and βρόχθος (brókhthos), but the connection with ἔχω (ékhō, “to hold”) is semantically unconvincing. Furnée compares ἀκτή (aktḗ, “promontory, edge”), which would point to a Pre-Greek word.
