Etymology[edit]
The etymology is unknown. Could be derived from Ancient Greek Μῆδος (Mêdos, “Mede”) or it's Coptic variant ⲁⲙⲁⲇⲁ (amada) in Gen. 10:2. Compare ⲁⲙⲙⲓⲧⲉⲛ (ammiten, “Amida, a town in Eastern Anatolia, modern Diyarbakır”) and ⲁⲙⲙⲓⲧⲟⲛ (ammiton, “Nicomedia”).
