Glyph origin[edit]
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) and ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 尸 (“body”) + phonetic 吊 (OC *tiːwɢs, “hanging”): “something that hangs from the body”.
Etymology[edit]
Derived from 鳥 (MC tewX, “bird”). Words for "bird" are commonly used to denote the penis in Chinese.
