A clipping of the Ming name 張家口堡张家口堡 (Zhāngjiākǒubǔ), named for Zhang Wen (), who directed its construction in 1429. For the use of , compare Mongolian ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠯᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣalɣan, gate), source of the alternate Chinese name 喀拉幹喀拉干 (Kālāgàn).
