Korean

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Early Modern Korean ᄉᆞᆯ오다 (solwota), from Middle Korean ᄉᆞᆲ다 (solpta), from Old Korean (*SOLP-). Cognate with Jeju ᄉᆞᆯ루다 (sawlluda).

In the Hangul script, first attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄉᆞᆲ다 (Yale: solp.ta). Inserting of —외— is likely due to analogy with 아뢰다 (aroeda).
