Etymology

From *Aiguptos (“Memphis”, “Egypt”) + -ijos (patronymic suffix). The root *Aigupt- ultimately derives from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ, a metonymical term for the city of Memphis. Cognate with Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios). Compare also Akkadian 𒄭𒆪𒌒𒋫𒀪 (ḫi-ku-up-ta-aḫ /⁠ḫikuptaḫ⁠/, “Memphis”) and Ugaritic 𐎈𐎋𐎔𐎚 (ḥkpt /⁠ḥikupta⁠/, “Memphis”) from the same source.
