Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tạrïg (millet). Cognate with Chuvash тырӑ (tyră), Turkish darı, Uzbek tariq, Bashkir тары (tarı), Khakas тарығ (tarığ). Compare also Mongolian тариа (taria), a Turkic borrowing.
