Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀤𑀺𑀁𑀦 (diṃna /diṇṇa/), from Sanskrit *दिन्न (dinna),[2] दत्त (dattá), from Proto-Indo-European *de-dh₃-tó-s, from *deh₃- (“to give”). Cognate with Pali dinna.
