Suffix

[edit]

-онький (-onʹkij)

  1. Suffix used to form diminutive adjectives from other adjectives. Often the diminutive meaning is lost, or an intensifying meaning is imparted.
    сухо́й (suxój, dry) + ‎-онький (-onʹkij) → ‎су́хонький (súxonʹkij, nice and dry)
    широ́кий (širókij, wide) + ‎-онький (-onʹkij) → ‎широ́конький (širókonʹkij, very wide)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • This suffix is used after roots ending in г, к, х to avoid palatalizing them. After other consonants, -енький (-enʹkij) is used.
  • The stress is drawn onto the syllable preceding the suffix.
