Italian

Etymology

[edit]

From Latin -eāmus (first-person plural present subjunctive suffix of the e-conjugation) and -iāmus (same of the i-conjugation). Repurposed as general first-person plural suffix for all conjugations and moods. Compare the second-person plural -iate, where the distinction between the conjugations was also lost, but the form did not encroach on the indicative and imperative.

Suffix

[edit]

-iamo (non-lemma form of verb-forming suffix)

  1. used with a stem to form the first-person plural present, present subjunctive and imperative of regular -are, -ere and -ire verbs
